A revisit to targets 12 years after Mumbai terror raids

On the night of November 26, 2008, Mumbai woke up to the sound of gunfire when terrorists attacked Chhabad House, two hotels, a railway station, a hospital and a place of worship. The attack left at least 197 people dead and about 600 injured.

Mumbai: November 26, 2020 marks the 12th anniversary of one of the deadliest terror attacks in India that left at least 197 people dead and about 600 people injured.

On the night of November 26, 2008, Mumbai woke up to the sound of gunfire when terrorists attacked Chhabad House, two hotels, a railway station, a hospital and a place of worship in India's financial capital.

As the night progressed, the severity of the attack was revealed of which the Mumbaikars still have bitter memories of.

To stop the gunmen raining bullets on the city, Mumbai police fought bravely and lost some bravehearts too. Today, we take a look at the top five places targeted by the terrorists

1) Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST)
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is the busiest railway station in Mumbai. Just as the attack on Leopold began on November 26, another group of terrorists also opened fire at the CST. There was a huge crowd of passengers from this railway station that day to go to their respective places. Noticing this crowd, two terrorists started firing. At least 58 people were killed and more than 100 were injured.

2) Hotel Oberoi Trident
Famous among traders, the terrorists also started firing at the Hotel Oberoi Trident, Leopold Cafe, CST. At the time of attack, the hotel had more than three hundred guests who were taken hostage. Thirty people lost their lives here.

3) Hotel Taj
The Taj Hotel near Gateway of India was also targeted by terrorists. It was only after the attack on the hotel by the sea that the world came to know about the intensity of the attack. Later, smoke billowed from the Taj Hotel. Foreign tourists, officials were in this hotel. At least 31 people were killed in the attack on the Taj Hotel. Police also killed 4 terrorists.

4) Chhabad House
Two terrorists stormed Chhabad House, a place of worship for Jews at Nariman Point. Many were held hostage. After several hours of fighting, NSG commandos were airlifted to the building where they killed the terrorists.

5) Leopold Cafe
Terrorists first opened fire on Leopold Cafe, which has a lot of foreign tourists. Ten people were killed in the shooting at Leopold Cafe.
