Torrential rains hit Maharashtra, alert issued in multiple districts

Over the past few days, several areas of Maharashtra have seen incessant rainfall. With rivers and streams swelling due to the continuous rain, many areas have been flooded and alerts issued in several towns and villages.

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Maharashtra has been witnessing heavy rains across the state for the past two days, leading to flooding in several areas with dams and water bodies. An alert has also been sounded in numerous riverside villages.

Here is a district-wise report:

SANGLI

Due to incessant rains and release of water from the Koyna dam, the water level of Krishna River has seen a sharp increase. At present, the water level of Krishna has reached 33 feet. The river's warning level is at 40 feet and the danger level at 45 feet. Considering the increasing water levels, the Sangli municipal administration began the evacuation of citizens from Sunday.

Meanwhile, the river water has started infiltrating in the flood belt of Sangli city. The migration of citizens from this area started yesterday. Due to heavy rains in the dam area, 14486 cusecs of water is being discharged from Chandoli dam.

SATARA

Due to torrential rains and a huge discharge of water from the Koyna dam, the Koyna river has started overflowing. As a result of a significant rise in the water level of Koyna and Krishna rivers, the area has become flood-prone. The Mulgaon Bridge, Sangamnagar Dhakka Old Bridge and Nisare Farshi Bridge connecting Patan city on Koyna river is reelin under water. Villages along the Krishna river have been alerted as the Koyna river is flood-prone.

KOLHAPUR

The rainfall in the district has increased and the water level of all the rivers in the district is increasing. The water level of the Panchganga river has also reached 37 feet and the warning level is likely to be crossed in a few hours. As it has been raining for the last four days, four automatic gates of Radhanagari Dam have been opened. Therefore, a large amount of water is being discharged. In addition, more than 95 dams in the district have gone underwater. NDRF squads have also been deployed in the district for security reasons and an alert has been issued everywhere.

GADCHIROLI

It has been raining heavily in the district for the last four to five days. Due to flooding of Pearlkota river, the Bhamragad-Alampally road has been shut since Saturday night. Although the floods receded to some extent today (Monday), due to floodwaters on Kummarguda Nala, the connection of 100 villages in the taluka has been cut off for the second day in a row. This road is also closed for traffic as water is flowing from Somanpalli Nala next to Asaralli on Sironcha-Asaralli-Jagdalpur National Highway No. 63.

The district has been receiving continuous rains for the last five days. As a result, 35 per cent of the rainfall deficit in the district has been covered. The water level is increasing due to continuous inflow of water in the Tapi river basin of the district. Villages along the Tapi river are being alerted as the water level will continue to rise for the next 72 hours. Meanwhile, 36 gates of Hatnur project in Jalgaon district have been opened and 91267 cusecs of water is being discharged into Tapi river basin. Similarly, the discharge of water from Hatnur dam in Jalgaon district is likely to increase soon.

AMRAVATI

Due to continuous rains in the district for the last five days, the Ghoddev waterfall in Warud taluka has a lot of water. Due to this, the river Jhunj originating from the border of Nagpur and Amravati districts is overflowing. Apart from this, a blanket of fog has spread in Melghat, known as Vidarbha's Kashmir, during the month of Shravan. The beauty of Chikhaldara Dharani taluka in Melghat has been further enhanced due to the torrential rains in the Satpuda mountain range for the last five days. A blanket of fog can be seen on the road all day long. However, due to the lockdown, tourists are deprived of the natural beauty in Melghat this year.

RAIGAD

The government had allowed fishing in the district from August 1. After a four-month wait, the fishermen sent their boats out to sea for fishing. However, due to changes in the sea conditions after August 3, the Fisheries Department has banned fishing till August 20. This has hit fishermen hard during peak season.

The Manikpunj dam, which supplies water to many villages in Nandgaon taluka, has filled to its full capacity and the dam has overflowed. NANDED

It has been raining continuously for the last three days in the district. Due to this rain, river nallas in Himayatnagar, Mahur, Kinwat, Bhokar talukas have been flooded. Road traffic is jammed in many places. For the last three days, there has been no sunshine in the district and occasional rainfall has continued. The moong crop has been wasted and the soybean crop is also turning yellow. This has left the farmers worried.

HINGOLI

The Siddheshwar Dam in Hingoli district is 100 per cent full as it has been raining continuously for the last four days. In addition, ten gates of the Yeldari Dam have been opened as it is 100 per cent full. Following that, eight gates of Siddheshwar Dam have also been opened. Due to the large discharge from both the dams, the entire river is overflowing. More than 50 villages along the river have been alerted following this.

PARBHANI

A large amount of water has been flowing from Khadakpurna dam in Buldhana district. As a result, six gates of Yeldari dam of Purna Irrigation Department are being opened and 12 thousand 600 cusecs of water is being discharged. This has alerted the riverside villages. Meanwhile, power generation has already started on the dam through two sets.

BEED

It has been raining heavily in the district for the last two days. Due to satisfactory rainfall so far, the Bindusara Dam, which supplies water to Beed city, is 99 per cent full. Apart from this, more than 75 per cent of water has been stored in Majalgaon backwater. Meanwhile, the farmers are happy as it is raining satisfactorily this year.

Heavy rains have lashed the district for the last two days. Heavy rains along with strong winds started in the district on Saturday evening. This has led to heavy rains in many parts of the district and many rivers and streams have been heavily flooded. Meanwhile, the bridge at Bahadur Sheikh Naka on the Mumbai-Goa highway was closed to traffic from Saturday night as the Vashishti River crossed the danger level. Due to the flood in Gadamendi in Sangameshwar taluka, citizens have been warned.

WASHIM

Many projects in the district have overflowed due to satisfactory rains this year. The Adol project supplying water to Rithad village, including Risod town at Borala in Malegaon taluka, has overflowed. Therefore, the problem of drinking water in Risod town, Shirpur, Rithad village has been solved for the whole year.

SINDHUDURG

Rains have once again intensified in the district. Roads have been flooded in many places. The road leading to Kudal railway station has been submerged due to rising water level of Bhangsal river in Kudal. This led to a traffic jam. The road leading to the city from Kudal Panchayat Samiti has also gone under water. In addition, many rivers in the district have been flooded.

The Bhangsal river at Kudal has been flooded and some parts of Kudal town have been submerged. The coastal areas of the district have also been hit by floods. Dahibaw beach in Devgad is being hit by the waves and there is already a big danger as the coastal area has been eroded.

PANDHARPUR (SOLAPUR)

Water is being discharged into Bhima and Nira rivers from dams in Pune and Satara districts. The water storage in Ujani Dam has increased by more than 42 per cent. The discharge of water from Veer Dam into Nira river has been increased to 42,000 cusecs. Therefore, the villages along the Bhima and Nira rivers have been alerted of the danger. The Pandharpur municipality has appealed to the citizens of the flood line in the city to be vigilant.
