Satara: Along with the Assembly polls in Maharashtra, counting of votes is also currently underway for the Satara Lok Sabha by-poll, the leads for which have thrown up an interesting scenario.

The bypoll was necessitated after NCP MP Udayanraje Bhosale quit the party and his Lok Sabha seat and joined the ruling BJP, which renominated him from the constituency.

According to the leads, Bhosale, who is Shivaji Maharaj's descendant, is trailing by over one lakh votes to NCP candidate Shriniwas Patil.

Bhosale had switched over to the BJP in the presence of party stalwarts in the likes of Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The campaign for the by-poll was much publicised as both the NCP and BJP traded bitter jibes and personal attacks. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi chided Sharad Pawar for not having the courage to fight the by-poll, the NCP chief had predicted that the saffron party would lose in Satara by a margin of over one lakh votes.

The Satara Lok Sabha by-poll, which was also held on October 21, saw a voter turnout of 67.15 per cent.
