Mumbai court seeks SIC's response on Sanjay Dutt's early release

In connection with a petition filed by A G Perariwalan who is a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Mumbai high court has issued a notice State Information Commission (SIC) demanding details of the early release of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt who was convicted in case of possessing arms illegally.

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Mumbai High Court has issued notice State Information Commission (SIC) in connection with a petition filed by A G Perariwalan, a convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The court demanded details regarding the early release of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt who was convicted in case of possessing arms illegally.

The bench of justices K R Chhagla and P Tated asked the advocate of the convict to submit information regarding the opinion of Tamilnadu governor Banwarilal Purohit on granting amnesty to Perariwalan and information given in affidavit to the home ministry.

Then 19 year old, Perariwalan was sentenced to life imprisonment for helping the accused of the Rajiv assassination case to make a bomb. He is currently in Puzhal jail in Chennai. The petition says that, in March 2016, information was sought regarding the early release of Sanjay Dutt under the Right To Information act from Yerwada jail authorities.

It requested that before sanctioning amnesty to the early release of Sanjay Dutt, was central and state government’s opinion was taken. When Perariwalan did not get any information from jail and other concerned authorities, he filed a petition before Mumbai High Court. SIC forced Perariwalan to knock on the doors of the high court.

His petition was filed in high court through advocate Nilesh Uke seeking information from SIC and Yerwada jail authorities. Sanjay Dutt was convicted under the Arms Act and his jail term was reduced by one year. He was sanctioned Furlough leave and parole on various occasions and later he was given amnesty. The special court had convicted Sanjay Dutt under Arms Act for six years. The Supreme court also held the verdict. But, his sentence was reduced by one year and in 2013, Sanjay Dutt was sent to Yerwada jail to serve his term.
