Pune: A major train accident was avoided due to the alertness of the loco pilot at the Urali and Loni stations railway lines near Pune junction on Friday around 7 pm.

The loco pilot of the train honked the horn as soon as he noticed a group of the people on the railway tracks.

The locomotive pilot applied emergency brakes after spotting around 20 people, including some sitting on tracks and others walking with their luggage on the tracks.

The incident was immediately reported to the control office of the Railways.

The railway administration asked the labourers to not use railway tracks and to avoid walking on it.

Citizens should not assume that trains are not functional. On the contrary, in the time of lockdown, freight and parcel trains are being operated in large numbers. Also, some special trains for migrant labourers have been announced. Therefore, trains are constantly plying on all railway lines. Therefore, citizens should not take such a risk, appealed the railways.

The incident comes just a day after at least 16 migrant labourers were killed and four others injured when a freight train ran over them between Jalna and Aurangabad.
