Maharashtra: 39 inmates of Byculla women's jail test Covid positive

39 inmates of Byculla women's jail have tested positive for Covid. The jail has been sealed in the wake of Covid cases.

Mumbai: Raising concern, 39 inmates have tested positive for Covid in Byculla women's jail in Mumbai. Out of 39, 36 patients have been quarantined at Patanwala School in Mazgaon. A pregnant woman who tested positive is admitted to Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital.

In order to prevent the further spread of Covid-19, the jail was sealed. On September 17, the local health centre raised concern over the uptick in the number of jail inmates diagnosed with fever. Subsequently, a two-day camp was organized for Covid tests in the jail from September 19. 120 people including inmates and staff underwent the test.

Manish Valanju, jail official, said that the prison was sealed after 39 inmates of Byculla Women's Jail tested positive.

Mumbai has been reporting over 400 Covid cases on a daily basis. Since March 2020, Mumbai has reported 7,40,761 Covid cases. There were 16,079 fatalities and currently there are 4,676 active cases. The recovery rate is 97 per cent while the doubling period is 1195 days at present.
