Pawar for unity among 'Marathi manoos' to overcome Maha floods

NCP chief Sharad Pawar called for unity

With floods wreaking havoc in western Maharashtra and the assembly elections round the corner, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday called for unity among the "Marathi manoos" to overcome the devastating crisis.

Pawar also said states of Gujarat, Bihar and Assam could reciprocate the help extended to them by Maharashtra when they had been hit by nature's fury in the past.

Interacting with locals from Tambave village in Karad taluka in western Maharashtra, once the stronghold of the Congress and the NCP, Pawar said all-round efforts are needed
to restore normalcy given the magnitude of the flood crisis.

The former Union minister assured efforts on his part to secure maximum assistance from the Central and state governments for flood relief works.

Maha floods: Water receding in Kolhapur and Sangli, relief ops continue

The flood situation in Kolhapur and Sangli districts in western Maharashtra showed signs of improvement on Saturday as water started to recede from inundated areas.

 However, it would take at least two to three days for the water to completely recede from the districts.

 Currently, the water level in Kolhapur is at 52 feet although the danger level is 47 feet.

The highest water level during the current flood was 57 feet.

Congress MLAs and MPs from Maharashtra would be donating one month's salary for flood relief in the state, the party said Friday.

State Congress president Balasaheb Thorat made the announcement after touring flood-affected areas of Sangli, Kolhapur and Satara.

He was accompanied by Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar and state Congress working president Vishwajit Kadam.

Two men have swept away in floodwaters in Maharashtra's Akola district in separate incidents in the last two days.

Dharma alias Mahendra Ramakrishna Wankhede (25) was swept away in the Pohara river at Dapura village in Telhara tehsil while crossing a bridge.

Prashant Balakrushna Gavarguru (36) was swept away in Vidrupa river at Panchagavhan village in the same tehsil.

The search was on in both cases.
