Two security guards drown in flooded lift

Two security guards died after getting stuck in a flooded lift in the basement of a building in central Mumbai on Wednesday morning, the police said.

The incident took place at Nathani Residency, a high- rise near Kala Pani junction of Agripada area.

Memon (37) took the lift to go to the basement to open a valve for water supply, a police official said.

But due to heavy rains throughout the night, the basement was flooded, and the water rushed into the lift as soon as the doors opened, he said.

Before the two could step out, the doors got closed and they were stuck inside, the official said.

Five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on standby in view of heavy rains that have lashed Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts and caused water-logging in many areas, Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar said on Wednesday.

Mumbai and neighbouring areas received intense spells of rain since Tuesday night, leaving many parts of the metropolis in waist-deep water and disrupting rail and road traffic.

Wadettiwar said in a statement that heavy rains caused the flood-like situation in many places, adding that Disaster Management department is keeping a close watch on the situation.

He appealed to people to stay indoors in view of flooding in many areas in Mumbai and other places.

Rains disrupted normal life in Mumbai; rail and road movement was severely hit by waterlogging at several places. The rains have affected local train services with the Central Railway suspending trains between CSMT-Thane/CSMT-Vashi due to waterlogging in Sion, Kurla, Chunabhatti, Malad and Matunga.

Heavy rains lead to waterlogging in several areas in the state. IMD predicted that heavy rains that have been lashing Mumbai since Tuesday may turn more fierce today with intense rainfall.

Mumbai received one of the highest showers in the last 24 hours of this monsoon season and more rainfall is likely in the city and suburbs on Wednesday, MeT officials said.

Rains lash several parts of Mumbai since Tuesday

Several areas in Mumbai received heavy rain starting late afternoon on Tuesday.

Areas in south Mumbai, as well as western and northern suburbs like Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad and Borivali received around 70 mm rainfall since Tuesday morning, said an official from IMD Mumbai.

There were reports of traffic jams in some places in Vile Parle and Ram Mandir areas due to the rain.

Heavy rains lashes parts of Mumbai

Mumbai: Suburban rail services on Central Railway have been affected due to continuous heavy rains in several parts of Mumbai. Services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Thane/Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Vashi have been suspended.

"Due to continuous rains and waterlogging at Sion-Kurla, Chunabhatti-Kurla and Masjid, suburban services on Central Railway are suspended between CSMT-Thane/CSMT-Vashi. Shuttle Services are running between Thane-Kalyan and beyond and Vashi and Panvel," the Central Railway said in a statement.

Also, long-distance special trains are being rescheduled. Apart from the suburban rail services, long-distance train operations have either been cancelled or rescheduled due to heavy downpour in the city.

The Manmad-Mumbai special train has been cancelled, while the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Guwahati special train has been rescheduled.

The CSMT-KSR Bengaluru special and CSMT-Lucknow special have also been rescheduled. Several parts of Mumbai received heavy rainfall on Tuesday night leading to waterlogging in some areas including Sion and Goregaon. Passengers were stranded at Sion railway station in Mumbai due to waterlogging.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), suburban Mumbai witnessed actual rainfall of 23.4 mm on Tuesday, a departure of 129 per cent from the normal rainfall.

The weather department has predicted 'generally cloudy sky with heavy rain' for the city on Wednesday.

The maximum temperature in the country's financial capital is estimated to be 32 degrees Celsius on Wednesday while the minimum temperature is predicted to be 26 degrees Celsius, it said. (ANI)
