Does Mahayuti have moral right to form govt if Sena fears poaching by BJP: Cong

The Congress questioned the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance's "moral right" to form government in Maharashtra if the Sena apprehends poaching of its MLAs by its senior ally.

"Shiv Sena is alliance partner of BJP and part of Maha-yuti (grand alliance). If it is afraid that BJP will poach its MLAs, then we can very well understand how much morally corrupt the BJP is, and why we must save Maharashtra from them," said state Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant.

Constitution not BJP's personal property, Sena has alternatives: Raut

Raut further gave an open challenge to the BJP to form the government alone if it has the numbers.

"If you (BJP) have the numbers, form the government. If you do not have the numbers, then admit it. Constitution is for the people of this country, it is not their (BJP's) personal property. We know the constitution well. We will elect the chief minister of Shiv Sena in Maharashtra constitutionally," he said.

"We have the numbers to make our own Chief Minister, we don't need to show that here, we will show that on the floor of the house. We have alternatives, we don't speak without options and alternatives," Raut added.

If mandate is for 'Mahayuti', why not stake claim to form govt: Raut questions BJP

Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said there was no change in his party's stand on government formation in Maharashtra and reiterated the demand for sharing the chief minister's post.

"If the mandate is for 'Mahayuti', why not stake claim to form the government? Why have you (BJP) returned empty-handed after meeting the governor?" the Rajya Sabha member sought to know.

"When you say the mandate is for 'Mahayuti', the mandate is also for what was agreed upon when the alliance was formalised (before the Lok Sabha polls)," he added.

Government will be formed under the leadership of Fadnavis: Gadkari

In his first public statement on the ongoing power tussle in Maharashtra, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that government should be formed under the leadership of incumbent chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. He further stated that RSS and its chief have no connection in this regard.

"No question of me returning. I will continue to work in Delhi," Gadkari said quashing reports of him returning as CM to aide in the formation of BJP-Sena government.

Sena claims poaching threat

As the tussle continues and the deadline approaching fast, the BJP-Sena alliance is trying to reach a consensus and form the government. Amid this ongoing drama, Shiv Sena has claimed poaching of their MLAs remains a threat even if it says it has a committed cadre.

Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray is currently meeting all the MLAs at Matoshree.

Gadkari likely to meet RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat

As the Maharashtra government formation efforts reach a critical stage, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is likely to meet Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at its headquarters here on Thursday, according to sources.

Gadkari and Bhagwat are expected to discuss the political scenario with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena unwilling to let go off the Chief Minister's post as the prospects of President's Rule loom ahead by this weekend.

The BJP's incumbent Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is also adamant on the post compelling the party to consider options, with the mantle likely to fall on Gadkari.

A veteran politician, a former state Minister, former BJP President, who some refer to as a 'Crisis Pehalwan', Gadkari is currently a Union Minister and enjoys a good equation with the RSS and all other political parties.

In the current political imbroglio, many in the BJP and RSS - besides the ally Shiv Sena - are optimistic that Gadkari can cut the Gordian's Knot in 'two hours' and pave the way for a saffron combine government to take office.

Gadkari also enjoys a good rapport with Sena President Uddhav Thackeray and earlier his father, the party's founder, the late Bal Thackeray, and several Sena ministers, many of them were his cabinet colleagues in the erstwhile Sena-BJP government of 1995-1999.

Besides Gadkari's meeting with Bhagwat, a BJP delegation will call on Governor B.S. Koshyari and Thackeray will address a meeting of Sena's newly-elected legislators later in the day.

No talks between Bhagwat, Uddhav yet: Shiv Sena

There have been no talks yet between RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on government formation in Maharashtra, Sena leader Sanjay Raut said on Thursday.

Talking to reporters here ahead of the meeting of Shiv Sena MLAs with Thackeray, Raut said legislators of his party and the opposition Congress and NCP "would not cross sides".

The BJP and the Shiv Sena are engaged in a bitter tug-of-war over the latter's demand for equal distribution of portfolios and sharing the chief minister's post.

The BJP has rejected Sena's demand for sharing the chief minister's post for two-and-a-half-years each. Sources from both the parties on Wednesday said back-channel talks were on between the two old but often-feuding Hindutva allies and a breakthrough was expected.

Mumbai: Amid the stand-off over government formation in Maharashtra, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that a Sena leader will become the chief minister. The BJP and the Shiv Sena are locked in a bitter tussle over the sharing of the chief minister's post and ministerial portfolios in new government in the state.

Raut, who is a Rajya Sabha member, earlier said his party was firm on a written assurance from the senior alliance partner over power-sharing, including rotation of the chief minister's post for two-and-a-half years.

He also claimed that there was a "consensus" between the BJP and the Shiv before the Maharashtra Assembly polls on sharing the chief minister's post.

The NCP, however, clarified their stand that mandate is for BJP-Sena alliance and Pawar-led NCP will play the role of effective Opposition.
