ETV Bharat reality check: Is there adequate oxygen in Mumbai Covid centres?

Work done by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation on ensuring the continuous supply of medical oxygen storage in Maharashtra was lauded by the Supreme court as well. At present, medical oxygen is available in all Covid centers in Mumbai.

Mumbai (Maharashtra): The number of Covid patients is rapidly increasing in Maharashtra which has put a strain on the healthcare system. Along with this, the country is experiencing a severe shortage of oxygen. However, the work done by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation on ensuring the continuous supply of medical oxygen storage has been great which was lauded by the Supreme court as well.

At present, medical oxygen is available in all Covid centers in Mumbai.

Mulund Covid Center

The Jumbo Covid Center in Mulund has a total of 1650 beds. More than 100 of those beds are empty and there are 700 beds available with the Oxygen supply. Presently, there is no shortage of oxygen. Dr. Abhay Naik of Jumbo Covid Center said that the Municipality has done proper planning with regards to the storage and supply of medical oxygen.

BKC Covid Center

BKC Covid Center Phase 1 requires 7.14 metric tons of oxygen per day and the oxygen tank installed there are 14.81 metric tons. While 7.14 metric tonnes is being used per day, 5.38 metric tonnes of oxygen is available daily from the Municipality. This leaves 11.97 metric tons of oxygen in the tank. At the same time, in Phase 2, the tank is 14.81 metric tons and the tanks are always filled with medical oxygen, said Dr. Rajesh Dere, Head, BKC Covid Center.

NESCO Covid Center in Goregaon

At present, the number of patients at the NESCO Covid Center in Goregaon has come down slightly. So, considering today, it takes 13.5 metric tons of oxygen per day. The center has two large tanks which contain enough oxygen for four days. As such, there is no shortage of oxygen here. Dr. Neelam Andrade informed that the center has a stock of 1200 oxygen cylinders.
