No plan to support Sena to keep BJP out: Maha Cong chief
Maharashtra Congress president Balasaheb Thorat yesterday ruled out joining hands with the Shiv Sena to keep the BJP out of power in the state, and said his party's mandate was to play the role of responsible opposition.
The Congress didn't have a "strategy or proposal" to prop up a Shiv Sena-led government, Thorat said, adding that ten Independents were in touch with him and they wanted to be part of the Opposition and not back the BJP-Sena.
The Congress won 44 seats in the polls for the 288-member Assembly, results of which were announced on Thursday.
As it became clear that the BJP would not be able to form government on its own, some Congress leaders including former chief minister Ashok Chavan had said the Congress should explore "all options" to keep the BJP out of power.
"The question of us offering support to the Sena doesn't arise. If the Sena approaches us, we will seek advice from our central leadership and its decision will be final," Thorat said at a press conference in Mumbai.

Alliance roadblock: Sena demands CM post for 2.5 years, Fadnavis hints at BJP-led alliance
Hyderabad: After not gaining a clear majority in the recently concluded Maharashtra polls, the race to the Chief Minister's office has become a hot topic.
Speculations and political equations by pundits are sending ripples across the country over who will make it to the office, Shiv Sena or BJP?
While the tables are tilted in favour of the BJP-Sena alliance, there is an interesting possibility of the Sena, NCP and Congress align to upset the BJP's applecart.
In the 288-member Assembly, the BJP won 104 seats, while ally Sena bagged 56. The NCP bagged 54 seats and the Congress in 43 seats.
In terms of the increase in the number of seats compared to the 2014 polls, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP emerged as the largest gainer, while the BJP's tally took a considerable dip.
This, however, did not dampen the enthusiasm of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who announced that the BJP-Sena combine will rule the state for another term.
In the 2014 polls, the BJP had won 122 seats, the Sena 63, the Congress 42 and the NCP 41. The BJP and Sena had then contested separately. The Sena joined the BJP-led government over a month after it was formed.
Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray looking elated after the triumphant maiden electoral foray of his son Aaditya, reminded the BJP of promises not fulfilled.
