Mumbai: While the NCP cadres were bowled over by Sharad Pawar's sudden resignation as the NCP chief, many asking him to reconsider his decision, Ajit Pawar who has created a buzz in recent days of purportedly cozying up with the BJP leadership, said that they must accept the change.

Ajit Pawar also pointed out at the former NCP chief's statement some time back about the necessity of the change of guard. Ajit who is believed to be a strong contender to the top post in the party said that one needs to look at his decision in light of his age and health conditions as well.

"Pawar himself had said about the necessity of change in guard a few days back. We should see his decision in the light of his age and health also. Everyone has to take a decision according to time. He has taken a decision and he won't take it back," Ajit said. However, he also highlighted that Sharad Pawar will always be the head of the NCP family.

Asked about the possible contenders to the top job, Ajit maintained that whoever accrues to the helm the party will work under the guidance of Sharad Pawar. Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar assured his party leaders that they will be working together. Pawar also asked them to accept his resignation from the post since some of them including Chhagan Bhujbal, Jitendra Awhad and Dilip Walse Patil urged him to reconsider his decision. "Let us all work together, but accept my resignation," Sharad Pawar said addressing his party workers who were opposing his resignation.

The vacancy in the topmost position in the NCP has the potential to disturb the political setup in Maharashtra. Recently, the Pawars were seen to be meeting industrial tycoon Adani and speaking in his favour at a time when the Congress-led Opposition was united in protest over the 'Adani fraud' issue. Posters of hailing Ajit Pawar as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra sprang up at certain parts of Mumbai.
