Vidisha: During the festival of devotion to Shakti in the city, a unique monolithic flame burns in the Durga temple in Vidisha district during Navratri. In this Durga temple, people reach here to burn the eternal flames. These devotees include Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and many other political personalities, NRIs and foreign dignitaries. To keep the flame of life burning, the flame of lamps burns in Vidisha's Durga temple

The history of the Durga temple at Durga Nagar in Vidisha is very old. For many decades, the Durga temple has been the center of the faith for the devotees. About 815 Akhand Jyoti or lamps are always burning here, they are lit for the wishes of the devotees. 125 lamps are burnt with ghee i.e. the clarified butter, while 685 burn with oil. They consume at least 12 quintals of ghee and oil.

Chief Minister Shivraj also a bhakt

The temple's Mahant Rameshwar Chaturvedi says that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has great faith in this temple. Shivraj Singh Chauhan himself comes here and lights his lamp. The first among the 815 lamps is that of Shivraj Singh Chauhan. Not only this, there lamps that have been lighted by people of many countries including America, Iraq. Many foreign devotees come here to pay obeisance.

Slip issued to light the lamp here

The family of local citizen Devna Arora has been continuously bringing unbroken flame for every Navratri for almost 50 years. Devna Arora herself has been burning an eternal flame for almost 35 years. Devna says that a slip is issued in this temple to light the flame. It is only after receiving that receipt, one gets to light their own flame. If someone’s flame is burning in the temple, he or she may visit there at any time to see it.

Jyot or lamp is not allowed to extinguish

Rishabh Vyas, who looks after Jyot, says that these Jyotis or lamps are burning in a room built in the temple premises. Six people have been deployed in the temple to guard them so that they do not burn out or get extinguished. It is their duty to ensure that they add ghee or oil to the lamps when they are reduced. For this ten-day, we all have this duty assigned to us from time to time.

The glory of the Jyoti Durbar of the ancient Jwaladevi temple in Durganagar, Vidisha is also incomparable.
