SIT probes toxic liquor deaths in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan appointed a 3-member SIT to investigate the deaths caused by spurious liquor in Morena district.

Morena: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) started an investigation into the deaths occurred after consuming spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district.

The team is expected to submit its report by January 18, said a government official.

Earlier, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had appointed a 3-member SIT to investigate the death and incident. The team comprising ACS (Home) Rajesh Rajora, ADG A Sai Manohar and DIG Mithlesh Shukla.

The team visited two villages and met the kin of the victims and recorded their statements.

Speaking to media, Additional Chief Secretary Rajesh Rajora said the government now can change the alcohol policy in the state following the incident.

"A strict law will be made for the people who indulge in illegal liquor supply. Also, sections 34 and 49A can be amended," he said.

So far, 24 people have died in Morena district after drinking what was suspected to be spurious liquor.

Besides, 15 people are currently undergoing treatment in different government hospitals in Morena and Gwalior.
