Morena hooch tragedy: Police nab main accused from Chennai, death toll rises to 25

With the death of one more person in Morena, the death toll due to consumption of spurious liquor rises to 25. Meanwhile, police have arrested the main accused person from Chennai.

Morena hooch tragedy: Police nab main accused from Chennai, death toll rises to 25

Morena: One more person has died in Morena spurious liquor tragedy taking the death toll to 25 on Monday. However, police have arrested the main accused from Chennai. The accused has been identified as Mukesh Kirar and he had a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head.

"The deaths in morena were very unfortunate and tragic. The investigation of the case is going on. We have arrested the main accused from Chennai today and including him, we have arrested five persons till now," said, Superintendent of Police Sunil Pandey.

"A case has been registered under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 34 and 91 of the Excise Act. An FIR against seven accused has been lodged for sale of spurious liquor. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the others," he said.

"The preliminary investigation found that the accused used chemicals to make spurious liquor and sell it to people in villages at a low price. Police seized a large number of liquor bottles from an agriculture farm where the accused used to make the hooch," he added.

meanwhile, the fatalities have risen in the Madhya Pradesh district since January 11 when the first reports came of people having taken spurious liquor.

The deceased person has been identified as Mata Prasad Kushwaha of Chhichhavali village of the district.

A senior police officer from Morena said last death was reported from Chhichhavali village. A post-mortem report is awaited to ascertain whether the liquor consumed by the victim was poisonous or not.

Some residents of Manpur and Chhichhavali villages in Morena fell sick allegedly after consuming spurious liquor on Saturday.

He said those who fell seriously ill were admitted to Gwalior hospitals for treatment.

On being informed about the death of another person, local MLA Ravindra Singh Tomar reached the village and assured victim's family that government will provide ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh to them.

Slamming Shivraj Singh led government in the state, he said that the chief minister has been making false claims about action against mafias operating in the state.

Notably, a three-member team, formed by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made investigations about the incident. At least five officials, including SDOP, have been suspended and the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the District Collector were transferred after the incident.
