Guna: Close on the heels of the recent incident in Madhya Pradesh where a Dalit couple was beaten by the police, another similar incident has come to fore in state's Guna district where a youth was mercilessly beaten on suspicion of theft.
The video, which has gone viral on social media in Guna, purportedly showed a bleeding man being beaten and then dragged with a towel tied around his neck while he lay on the ground.
The victim has been identified as Dharmendra who is a resident of Mahugadha village.
The police claimed the man was "a thief and a drug addict" and cases in this connection were registered against him in neighbouring Ashoknagar district.
Speaking to media, Guna's Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Kumar Singh, said that a case has been filed and the matter is being investigated.
"We have filed a case against at least eight unidentified people. We are identifying the people seen in the video to take action against them for beating the man," he said.
Meanwhile, after the incident, the state Congress once again took a potshot against the Shivraj-led BJP government and said, "Once again a barbaric incident against a Dalit has come to the light in Scindia's area. The Dalit was beaten badly and dragged around the market. The act of barbarism is on the rise."
