Barwani (Madhya Pradesh): A pregnant woman from Khamgaon in the tribal-dominated Barwani district had to be carried on a makeshift cloth stretcher for around 8-kms, as there is no motorable road. As the woman began experiencing labor pain, she had to be taken to the hospital by her family members and villagers. The woman wrapped in a bedsheet was tied to a bamboo pole and taken to Rani Kajal village wherein an ambulance was arranged to take her to the hospital which is further 20 km away.
This is not something new for the villagers, as every time a person falls sick they are wrapped in cloth stretchers and taken to the community health centre in Pansemal town, in the district. Narrating their ordeal, villagers say that during the rainy days, one has to wait for hours for the waters to recede, adding that if there is an emergency during night, their trouble would only increase.
No road laid, despite several appeals
Though there are two MPs and a minister from the district, no roads have been laid in the village till date. Due to this ambulance services isn't accessible. Since independence, the villagers are yearning for basic facilities. Sawai Singh Rawat, a villager from Khamgaon says that despite having appeal for the last 15 years, to several leaders including CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan none of their problems were resolved.
