Sagar: Apart from teaching humankind the meaning of life and its purpose, the Covid-19 pandemic has also made people familiar with a few words that were hardly used before. One such word is "Quarantine" which became popular and used by almost everybody since the pandemic first hit the world in 2019. On one side, not everyone was familiar with this word before the outbreak of Covid-19, whereas, on the other side, the people of Madhya Pradesh's Malthon, situated along the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, are very well acquainted with this word and have been using it since ages.
As per reports, there is an abandoned area - spread over about four to five acres in Malthon - which is called as "Quarantine" by the local people. They also say that during British rule animals used to be quarantined here for the treatment and vaccination of infectious diseases. It is also said that infected people were also quarantined here during the spread of the Spanish flu in 1918-20. Speaking about this place, Dwarka Prasad, a local resident said that the word "Quarantine" has been in frequent use for the last one year or so but here every one is familiar with this word for many years.
Meanwhile, local historians also said that after the spread of the Spanish flu, which was known as Red Fever in India, Britishers had made quarantine centres in Malthon since then this area has been known as "Quarantine" by the local people.
