New Delhi: Accusing Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath of using coronavirus outbreak as a delaying tactic to hold floor test in the state assembly, the BJP on Tuesday said after resignation of several MLAs, his government is in minority and lacks legitimacy.
"Coronavirus outbreak is being used as a shield. Chief Minister Kamal Nath should resign and pave the way for the new government," BJP spokesperson Zafar Islam told ETV Bharat here.
The BJP leader said earlier Kamal Nath had said he was ready to prove majority in the state assembly but now he is running away from the floor test.
"They want to indulge in horse-trading," Islam alleged, saying the MLAs who resigned have gone to the Supreme Court and it would decide the matter.
On whether the rebel Congress MLAs would join BJP, he said it "depends on them".
He, however, stressed since it's a minority government, Kamal Nath should resign and pave the way for a new government in the state.
Kamal Nath has argued that the opposition party must table a no-confidence motion against his 15-month-old Congress government if they want to test its strength in the house.
The Kamal Nath government’s problems began last week after 22 MLAs resigned from the assembly in the wake of former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia joining the BJP.
With the speaker accepting the resignation of six MLAs, the strength of the House came down to to 222, with the majority mark at 112.
Before the crisis, the Congress had 114 MLAs, and enjoyed the support of four independent legislators, two MLAs of the Bahujan Samaj Party and one legislator of the Samajwadi Party. The BJP has 107 MLAs.
