'Kadaknath' Chicken is an Indian breed mainly found in Madhya Pradesh. The bird is completely black -- not only its plumage but also its meat, legs.
The Kadaknath is popular mainly for its adaptability, and the good-tasting black meat, which is believed to have medicinal properties. The famous Kadaknath chicken meat has got a Geographical Indication (GI) tag also.The tag denotes that the product comes from a particular geographical area, and often enhances its commercial value.
As the demand for Kadaknath increases during the winter. Poultry farmers cash in on the opportunity every year. The state government has also established a poultry farm center with the help of the Animal Husbandry Department, in which approximately 1.5 lakhs Kadaknath hen are produced.
Recently, the breed virtually became a bone of contention between Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh with both the states staking claim over its nativity.
