The challenge before the doctors was to protect the infants from the infection.

Sanjay Mishra, a doctor at the hospital, said ''The unborn child is not at risk of HIV infection unless it comes in touch with mother's blood. But there is a potential risk during delivery due to exposure to the blood coming out of the mother's body. So soon after birth, the mother is also given the required medicines. Caesarean delivery increases the risk and needs more care.''

According to physicians, HIV infection during pregnancy is periodically tested and treated, but the risk increases during delivery.
