Health workers suspended over maggots in patient's wounds

Anil Kumar, from Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram, was found to have maggots in his bedsores after discharge from the COVID ward, continues to be critical.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Department suspended three healthcare workers, including a doctor on Friday after a COVID patient was found to have maggots wriggling all over his body post-discharge from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital last week.

The Health Department Secretary had sought a report from the Medical Education Director, earlier. The Suspension has been issued based on the report submitted by the Medical education Director, stating that there has been a lapse in duty from the health staff.

Nodal Officer Dr Aruna and Health nurses Leena Kunjan and Rajani have been suspended in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, the health status of Anil Kumar, from Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram, was found to have maggots on his bedsores after discharge from the COVID ward, continues to be critical.

Anil was hospitalised after he fell down and injured himself in August. He contracted COVID while in the ICU at the hospital after which he was shifted to the COVID ward.

Currently, he is undergoing treatment at the surgical ward in Peroorkada Government Hospital.
