Kannur: Kerala Prison Department plans to open the portals of one of its Central jails for tourists to stay there for a fee as part of a prison museum coming up at the Kannur Central prison.
The Kannur Central Prison is likely to implement the ‘Feel the Jail’ scheme as part of jail tourism projects experimented in Telangana and other states.
As per the scheme, anyone who pays can experience prison life for one day.
The scheme 'Feel the Jail' is ideal for starting in Kannur Central Jail as it has better facilities and also Kannur is one of the oldest prisons in the state started in the year 1869.
For this purpose, the government will seek the assistance of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).
Along with the museum, a shoe factory in the prison is also planned to be set up next year.
The shoe factory will be opened in Kannur Cheemeni, Poojappura Central and Viyyur Jails.
In the shoe factory, shoes for policemen and student police cadets are expected to be made.
Another upcoming project for the jails in Kerala is the project to start petrol pumps in prison.
The government is planning to set up petrol pumps at Cheemeni, Kannur, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Ernakulam jails.
In order to start the project, discussions with oil company representatives are in progress.
