Rahul Gandhi is leading in the Wayanad Parliamentary constituency with a margin of over four lakh votes.

According to the Congress, the move to contest from a southern state was aimed at sending a message of inclusion for all and ensuring southern representation in national politics.

However, Rahul lost his family bastion Amethi to BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani.

While Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed the situation as a "bittersweet" ending for the Congress.

The southern state had witnessed heavy polling of 77.68 per cent, the highest in 30 years, where the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the opposition Congress-headed UDF put up a fierce fight to garner maximum seats.
