Ernakulam: Here comes another robot to take care of COVID-19 patients in isolation wards and help minimise health workers’ interaction with the patients.

Malayalam actor Mohanlal’s ViswaSanthi Foundation donated an autonomous robot to serve the patients in isolation at the Ernakulam Medical College Hospital COVID Ward.

The use of robot will help in minimising direct interaction between the health workers and the coronavirus patients, thereby easing the workload of the hospital staff and reducing risk.

Major Ravi, a film director and ViswaSanthi Foundation director, handed over the robot to Ernakulam District Collector S Suhas, here on Saturday.

The robot, named KARMI-Bot, made by ASIMOV robotics company, cost Rs 2.5 lakhs. KARMI-Bot is all set to attend to the patients in the COVID wards along with the health workers, from Saturday.

The KARMI-Bot will be mainly engaged in supplying food and other necessities to the patients in the ward and collect the food waste after the patients are done with their meals. Besides, the robot will also interact with the patients and inform the nurses or doctors if the patients need anything else.

KARMI-Bot is fully autonomous and barely requires manual controlling, once it is set. The patient’s details, bed numbers and other information regarding the COVID ward can be mapped and set in the robot. Once this is done and updated as required, KARMI-Bot will know the route and requirements to reach out to patients and serve them. Hence, it does not require manual controlling thereafter.

KARMI-Bot will be disinfected before and after each visit to the patient’s rooms.
