Onam festivities begin in Kerala with rallies and folk art performances

'Athachamayam' celebrations marking the beginning of harvest festival Onam began with a colourful rally and folk dances in Kochi on Monday. State Culture Minister A K Balan inaugurated the celebrations at Tripunithura city. The festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is believed to visit Kerala to see his subjects at the same time every year.

Kochi: A colourful rally accompanied by folk dance performances on Monday marked the 'Athachamayam' celebrations, heralding the start of the 10-day 'Onam' festivities in Kerala.

State Culture Minister A K Balan inaugurated the celebrations at nearby Tripunithura, capital of the erstwhile Royal Kingdom of Kochi.

In his speech, the Minister highlighted the relevance of Onam, saying it displays the unity of people beyond caste, creed and religion.

Onam festivities have begun in Kerala with rallies and folk art performances.

The state government has made elaborate arrangements for celebrating Onam this year. The spirit of Onam would give strength to the people of the state to come out of the difficulties caused due to the devastating floods, Balan said.

Various folk art forms like Theyyam, Kolkali, Mayilattom, Ammankudam, Pulikkali, and classical art forms like Kathakali added colour to the Athachamayam procession.

Giving a rhythmic touch to the procession, percussionists performed Chendamelam and Panchavadyam.

In the days of kings, the Maharaja of Kochi used to participate in the procession from Tripunithura to the Vamanamoorthy temple at Thrikkakara.

According to legends, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is believed to visit Kerala at the time of Onam to see his subjects.

In kerala Onam celebrations starts today. As a part of it 'Atham dinam' celebrated in Ernakulam district, Thrippunithura. Thousands of people gathered in the function which is organised by Thrippunithura corporation. Cultural minister A K Balan inaugrated the function. The celebration was held according to the Green Protocol. Plastic bottles and flecks were banned during the program. 400 police officers were deployed for security. Organizers ensured the service of the medical team and fire force.

After the inaugration different verieties of Kerala art forms had been part of the procession.

This was a great opportunity for people to enjoy so many folk arts like mudiyaattam, theyyam, thullal, kathakali, kummaattikali, chenda melam, panja vaadyam together in the function. At the same time, the number of arts was less than earlier times. Beacuse, considering the post-flood situation, expensive art forms were excluded from the procession.



During the monarchy, Atham day in 'Chingam' month, kochin kings were wearing special tights with the army in the procession known as 'Athachamayam' celebration which is prior to onam. Although the procession ceased with the end of the monarchy people's committy restored the function.
