Pathanamthitta (Kerala): Sixty-eight-year-old Omana, who fell unconscious and floated down the Manimalayaru river for hours together on Thursday morning, had a miraculous escape.
She was rescued from drowning due to timely intervention and rescue efforts by the locals in Kuttoor. The quick response and presence of mind of a few people who lived by the riverside in Kuttoor, of Pathanamthitta district, paved the way for Omana's miraculous return to life.
Omana, of Thottiyil house in Manimala, a small river-side town in Kottayam district, was reported to be missing from her house since wee hours on Thursday. Her son had soon filed a missing complaint with the Manimala Police Station as the search for her yielded no results.
On Thursday morning, some of the locals near Kuttoor Railway bridge in neighbouring Pathanamthitta district spotted the woman floating down the river. They immediately informed one Reji Varghese who lives on the river banks, at Thondara Kadavu in Kuttoor. Reji, who reached out to her in his small boat, rescued her from the river and took her to his house. After first aid, Reji gave hot water fomentation to Omana’s hands and feet. Soon, Omana regained consciousness.
On being informed, Thiruvalla Police reached Reji's house and shifted the woman to Taluk Hospital in Thiruvalla. By afternoon, Omana gave her son’s phone number following which her relatives were informed, said Thiruvalla Police.
She has been taken to Kottayam Medical College Hospital for further medical examination.
