Thiruvananthapuram: Kodiyeri Balakrishnan stepped down as State Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) due to health issues. The state committee accepted his resignation. Left Democratic Front Convenor A Vijayaraghavan has been given charge of party affairs. Balakrishnan's resignation comes after his son Bineesh Kodiyeri got entangled in controversial Bengaluru drug case.
According to reports, Balakrishnan explained the details of the case to the party and had stated that his son has to face the case verdict if found guilty, by taking sole responsibility and the party need not interfere in the case. However, he also stated that the Enforcement Directorate's locking up of Bineesh for 24 long hours was a violation of human rights.
Bineesh was remanded in prison after the Enforcement Directorate's investigation. The Narcotics Control Bureau had sought his custody for investigation. The ED officials have been collecting information on illegal money in Bineesh's account. The investigation revealed that Binesh was handling luxury hotels in Bangalore and Kerala.

It has also come to light that a lot of money has been deposited from these hotels to Binesh's Account. As the huge amount of money accumulated in his account merely from hotel administration has drawn the suspicion of the ED officials, the probe continued.
The NCB has got information that Binesh is connected with Mohammed Anoop. Anoop is the main accused in the case who is now detained by the NBC. NBC has solid evidence proving peddling of drug by Anoop at a restaurant in Kammanahalli in the city.
