Kollam: Perinad village in Kollam district in the state of Kerala has set an example by becoming plastic-free through proper waste management.
With the efforts of around forty women, Perinad village has now been declared a model panchayat by the State government under the direction of National Green Tribunal.
The women in the first place collect plastic wastes from each house from different wards. The collected plastic is segregated and cleaned thoroughly at their unit.
After cleaning the plastic waste is shredded into very small pieces.
The shredded plastic is then taken to Clean Kerala Company Limited for its final discarding. And, the company uses shredded plastic in laying plastic roads.
The waste management unit works for 24 hrs and is being headed by Vijaya Lakshmi, Ambili, and Sherly.
The initiative of these women is receiving a lot of support and appreciation. They are now planning to implement electronic waste disposal in their panchayat.
