Kasaragod: Gopalan, a native of Poodamkallu in Kasaragod district, started sculpting figures with the roots and branches of trees in his premises which turned out to be famous meticulous piece of art.
Once the roots and branches of trees like teak, jackfruit tree, and rosewood available in his locality, reaches Gopalan’s hands, they transform into beautiful sculptures. The roots have taken the forms of tortoise, elephant, crane and fish, through his meticulous handwork.
"I started making such wooden sculptures in 1985. I do it occasionally when I catch hold of strong roots. Things have started getting momentum in the last 4-5 years only," Gopalan said.

Gopalan makes use of the frames of irreparable clocks to make and attach the images of gods and goddesses through his craft. He has a deft touch in decorating framed photos with beads. Though it all started as a leisure time hobby, of late, Gopalan has been working on such crafts full time now.
Gopalan’s sculptures have many takers and many remain amazed as to how the roots and the branches of trees can be so well sculpted to make other figures.
