Kerala: 59 minor girls abused by a shopkeeper

A man has been accused of abusing 59 minor girls sexually in Kerala's Palakkad district. He abused children who'd visit his shop for purchasing chocolates or stationery items.

Thrithala: A shopkeeper has been accused of assaulting 59 minor girls sexually under the Thrithala police station in Kerala's Palakkad district on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Krishnan (57) is a native of Kakkattiri village.

Krishnan owns a stationery shop in Thrithala and has been absconding after a complaint was filed. The incident came to light after one of the victims revealed this to her parents.

Further probe revealed that more girls have been victims of Krishnan.

Notably, he abused children who'd visit his shop for purchasing chocolates or stationery items. Krishanan has been assaulting the girls for years now and he would threaten them to keep it as a secret.

Children activists and parents filed a complaint to Thrithala police following which officers recorded statements of the minor victims.

The police have registered a case against him under the POCSO Act.

An investigation is underway.

 a complaint was lodged with the Thrithala police stating sexual abuse of 59 girls of an upper primary school in Thrithala by a shop owner. In connection with the incident, police registered a case against Krishnan (57), a native of Kakkattiri under POCSO act. Krishnan is the owner of a stationery shop here. Police are looking for the absconding man. Police have searched his house at Kakkattiri but in vain. And the investigation is progressing based on his mobile phone. He abused the girls who came to his shop for buying toffies and other stationery items. The incident of serial abuse came to light on Thursday when a victim revealed about it. In further probe into the matter, more students shared same bad experience with school teachers.

The matter was alerted to Childline activists by the teachers and parents. Childline activists recorded statements of 59 children from the school. On Friday, Childline activists provided counselling to the victims and legal advice to their parents. Based on a complaint lodged by parents and Childline activists with Thrithala police, the officers recorded statements of 11 students from the school. Statements of other girls will be recording in the coming days. School principal said that according to the information received, Krishnan has been abusing the girls for years. However, children kept it a secret as he threatened them. The unfortunate experience happened to 5, 6 and 7th standard students.
