Heavy rain slows down voting in Kerala; polling time might be extended

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains dampened voting for bypolls to the five Assembly constituencies in Kerala on Monday morning and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the showers to continue through the day.

The worst affected were Ernakulam and Konni constituencies, which recorded 4.9 per cent and 11.5 per cent voting till 9 a.m. respectively. Among the other three constituencies, Vatiyoorkavu witnessed 11.5 per cent, Aroor 12.8 per cent, and Manjeswaram 16.5 per cent polling till 9 a.m.

Most of the area in the Ernakulam constituency is waterlogged following the heavy rains since morning.

Rains affect bypolls in Kerala.

"A few polling stations have been shifted from the ground floor to the first floor in Ernakulam Assembly constituency. Around 500 officials, including police, are making the arrangements. We will wait for the reports from the district collectors of the constituencies. We have made arrangements to transport voters to the polling stations in some places. If needed, we will extend the polling time as well," said Tika Ram Meena, Kerala's Chief Electoral Officer.

Voters expressed their ire as they were unable to go out and cast their ballots.

"In all these years, I have not lost the opportunity to cast my vote. I have never seen such rain on a voting day in my life, but I am determined to vote," said a 78-year-old nun, who arrived at a flooded polling station in Ernakulam.

"There's water all around us and how could we go out and vote when we are worried about our belongings? We are waiting for authorities to come," said an angry resident of a colony near here, where there are 87 families who are trapped.

In Konni, a constituency with hilly terrain, voters living in higher areas are finding it hard to reach polling stations after flooding left several roads unmotorable.

A total of 9,57,509 voters, including 4,91,455 women, 4,66,047 men and seven transgenders, are deciding the fate of 35 candidates at 846 polling stations in Vatiyoorkavu, Aroor, Konni, Ernakulam and Manjeswaram.

Polling began at 7 a.m. and will go on till 6.30 p.m. in the state.

Polling begins in Kerala's 5 constituencies; low turnout in bypolls due to heavy rain

Braving heavy rains, early voters queued up at polling stations in the five assembly constituencies in Kerala on Monday where bypolls are being held, to cast their franchise. A total of 9.57 lakh voters are expected to participate in the bypolls being held in Vattiyoorkavu (Thiruvananthapuram), Aroor (Alappuzha), Konni (Pathanamthitta), Ernakulam and Manjeshwaram (Kasaragod).

LDF candidate in Manjeshwaram M. Sankar Rai cast his vote as the first voter in the booth at Angadimogaru school. Meanwhile, heavy rain at various places in the state is likely to affect the voting process. Heavy rainfall is experienced in Aroor and Konni since early hours on Monday. Rainfall continues in Vattiyoorkavu and Ernakulam also. According to reports, polling will be delayed in some booths in Aroor constituency due to power failure. Waterlogging is seen in many places in Ernakulam. The polling will be scheduled to a later date if the situation worsens, Chief Election Commissioner Teeka Ram Meena informed. The decision will be taken on the basis of the District Collector's report, he added.

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted that heavy rains are likely to continue in Kerala for the next two days. Orange alert has been declared in six districts on October 21 and seven districts on October 22.
