Palakkad: The mysterious death of the two little sisters at Walayar in Palakkad and the incidents that unfolded over the years have shaken the social conscience of Kerala.

As many as 42 cases have been registered at the Walayar Police Station, for violation of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, since the law came into force in 2012.

According to reports, the most number of POCSO cases have been reported at the Walayar Police Station in the State.

Nevertheless, the accused in only two of the total of 42 registered cases have been convicted and penalised.

As many as 23 of the 42 cases are still undergoing trial. Eight of the 42 cases have been settled with the consent of the complainant and rest of the cases are still undergoing legal proceedings.

In 2018 April, the POCSO Act was amended to enable granting death penalty for the rape of children below 12 years of age.

The first case registered in Kerala after the POCSO amendment was also reported in Walayar.

A year ago, actions were initiated against the police officers attached to Walayar Police station after it was found that there were lapses on their side in the POCSO case proceedings.
