Kannur: A memorial for the legendary Argentine football player Diego Maradona would be established by the City Corporation at Kannur Jawahar Stadium in Kerala soon.

Speaking to the ETV Bharat here on Saturday, Kannur Mayor Advocate T O Mohanan said, the works of Maradona’s statute would be completed in three months. The statue of the international football legend would be installed at the Jawahar stadium in Kannur. It is being modelled in the way Maradona kicks the football.

Jawahar Stadium in Kannur district of Kerala is the only stadium in India where Diego Maradona has kicked the football. On 24 October 2012, Maradona, who had reached Kannur as part of a jewellery group’s promotional activities, had kicked the football and addressed the masses who had gathered to get a glimpse of the ‘football god’ in the stadium.

Kannur corporation is all now set to build a memorial for Maradona at the Jawahar Stadium in memory of this cherished moment by the football fans across Kerala.

The suite room at the Blue Nile Hotel in Kannur where Maradonna had stayed during his visit back in 2012 has been maintained as ‘Maradona Suite’ in memory of him. All the articles used by Maradona, including cutlery, have been showcased here in his memory. The Corporation’s decision to install a Maradona statue at the Jawahar stadium came thereafter.

Maradona had died of cardiac arrest on 25 November 2020.
