Bengaluru: A rock, possibly a celestial object, landed in a village in Karnataka's Chikballapur district on Thursday night, residents claimed.

Villagers decided to send it to the state Mines and Geology department

Residents of Srirampura said that the rock, which weighs between 1-2 kilos, is different in appearance with respect to the local surroundings.

An eyewitness claimed that a "ball of fire" fell down from the sky at around 8.30 pm last night.

"I usually come for prayers in the temple around 8 or 8.30 pm. When I parked my two-wheeler, a ball of fire fell on the ground. After examining it, we found that it was a rock," said Srinivas.

Another villager, Ambarish, said that the villagers were surprised as it was the first time they witnessed such an event.

"We are seeing this sort of thing for the first time and are very surprised. It came down like a rocket," he said.

While a few villagers suspect that the rock is actually a meteorite, they have decided to send it to the state Mines and Geology department for testing.

In a similar development last year, three farmers had discovered a suspected meteorite, which looked like an ordinary piece of rock but had magnetic properties, at their village Mahadeva in Bihar's Madhubani district.
