Davangere: A sniffer dog, Tunga with Davangere police has done a feat of running 12 kms to nab a murder accused, tracking him down to a house where he was hiding.

Addressing media persons, Davangere SP, Hanumanthappa said that Tunga ran 12 km non-stop from Basavapattana in the city to a house at Kashipur in the rural limits where the murder accused, one Chethan was hiding. "She helped us to arrest him on July 17", he said.

Chethan allegedly shot dead his friend Chandra Nayak with a stolen service revolver on July 10 over a dispute of sharing the looted gold ornaments.

While the sniffer dogs normally run four to five kms from a crime spot, Tunga could track accused 12 km away. Chethan confessed the theft and murder, police said.

The nine-year-old 'Tunga' has helped the Davanagere police to solve 60 cases of murders and thefts.

Tunga, who joined the Davangere police as a three-month-old puppy from Adugodi in Bengaluru has till now traced accused persons in 30 murder and 30 theft and dacoity cases.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, the dog handler said: "The dog travels from a crime scene to track down the accused on the basis of smell. She is a tracker dog".

This Doberman was brought to Butenagar after nine-months of training. The dog handler proudly said Tunga can sniff 2,363 perfumes.

The head constable Prakash, Lohit and K. Venkatesh have the responsibility to look after the dog. The dog usually eats rava ganji, milk, eggs and 'royal kam' in morning breakfast while in the evening he eats 1kg meat along with vegetables.
