Thousands pay last respects to Pejavara Mutt Seer 

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman joined a sea of mourners at the National College grounds here in paying their last respects to Pejawar Math head Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji, who passed away on Sunday.

The Finance Minister is a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, deputy chief minister Govind Karjol and Karnataka revenue minister R Ashoka also paid their homage.

The body of the 88-year-old seer, who passed away in Udupi earlier in the day, was flown to Bengaluru in a special Indian Air Force helicopter.

The body was then taken to the National College Ground, the same venue where the seer had addressed gatherings on several occasions in the past, in a flower beddecked vehicle.

A stage was set up under the marquee where the body of the seer, decked in a saffron cloth with golden border, was placed in a Padmasana posture inside a basket like palanquin.

Seers of various prominents Maths in the state, Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Math, Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji of Sravana Belagola Jain Math were among those who paid their last respects.

The last rites will be performed at Poorna Prajna Vidyapeetha, which the seer had established. Elaborate security arrangements were made at the National College to manage the crowds.

The state government has announced three-day mourning from December 29-31, following the demise of Pejavara Mutt Seer. The last rites wil be performed at 7 pm today at Vidyapeeth. The seer was given state honours in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the death of Swami Vishwesha Teertha of Pejawar Math, saying he will remain in the hearts and minds of lakhs of people. 

An ailing Swami Vishwesha, 88, died on Sunday.

 "Sri Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji of the Sri Pejawara Matha, Udupi will remain in the hearts and minds of lakhs of people for whom he was always a guiding light," the prime minister tweeted.

He said the seer was a powerhouse of service and spirituality and continuously worked for a more just and compassionate society.

Udupi: Pejavara Mutt Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swami passed away at the age of 88. 

Earlier, today he was shifted to Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt from KMC Hospital.

Consider the critical illness of the revered seer, all arrangements of ventilator and ICU units were kept ready in the Mutt.

Meanwhile, saints and seers at the mutt were conducting special prayers for the speedy recovery of Vishwesha Teertha Swami.
