Dharwad (Karanataka): Karnataka Deputy CM Dr Ashwath Narayan, who also holds the higher education portfolio, on Monday said that the union government's new National Education Policy (NEP) will be implemented in government institutions of the department of higher education across the state from the current academic year (2021-22).
Addressing a meeting convened with educationists at Karnataka University regarding the new National Education Policy - 2020, Narayan said that the NEP will be implemented in government higher education institutions by making use of LMS (learning management system) and Unified University College Management System (UUCMS).
Private colleges which have good infrastructure should come forward to implement NEP from the current year itself. Other institutions should also get ready to implement this in a gradual manner, Narayan suggested.
NEP aims to integrate various capabilities of the human intellect. It aspires to provide global exposure to the students even as it wishes to make them aware of the roots of the Indian tradition, he explained.

Prof Gudasi, Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka University, Dr Thimmegowda, Vice-Chairperson, State Higher Education Council, Prof. Sankanuru, MLC, Dr Eshwar Bhat and representatives from several institutions were present in the meeting.
The Union Cabinet, on 29 July last year, approved the new National Education Policy (NEP) and renamed the HRD Ministry as Education Ministry. The newly approved education policy includes a target of 50 per cent Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by 2035 and provision for multiple entry and exits.
The choice between 3 or 4-year undergraduate courses, multiple entry and exit options in degree courses, adding 3.5 crore seats in higher education institutions, which will now have a single regulator, discontinuation of M.Phil programmes and fixation of fees are among the higher education reforms outlined in the new NEP. The policy has proposed the setting up of a 'single overarching umbrella body for the entire higher education.
