Karnataka rains: Death toll increases to 10, CM assures help to those affected

The death toll in Karnataka touched 10 after one more death was reported from the Uttara Kannada district. Extremely heavy rain has been predicted in several districts of Karnataka to make the situation worse as many districts are already flooded. Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa inspected flood-affected areas in the Belagavi district on Sunday. The Chief Minister assured the government help to all the affected.

Belagavi/Uttara Kannada (Karnataka): The death toll in Karnataka touched 10 after one more death was reported from the Uttara Kannada district. Extremely heavy rain has been predicted in several districts of Karnataka to make the situation worse as many districts are already flooded. Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa inspected flood-affected areas in the Belagavi district on Sunday. The Chief Minister assured the government help to all the affected.

According to data shared by the KSDMA, as many as 283 villages in 45 taluks were the worst affected due to widespread rains, which have impacted more than 36,498 people. While 10 people have died, two others are reported missing in the state.

Rains batter Karnataka, more rains warned

Addressing the media at Belagavi, Yediyurappa said that "I have visited flood-affected areas of Nippani and Sankeshwara. A meeting was also held with the authorities. We have discussed the flood problem, the damage. 113 villages in 7 taluks of Belagavi district have been damaged. More than 13,000 people have been displaced. 89 care centres have been set up in the district. 8,900 people have been sheltered in these centres."

The Chief Minister also said that food and other facilities are arranged in the care centres. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in the catchment areas of the Krishna river. The rainfall is likely to increase the inflow and the reservoirs are brimming already. "All the reservoirs in Krishna river are full and the excess water is flowing from Maharashtra. We are in constant touch with the Maharashtra authorities and monitoring the situation," he stated.

The chief minister appraised the disaster mitigation works underway. "There are chances of floods turning intense. Eight NDRF teams are deployed in the district. Firefighters and navy helicopters are ready. "The state does not have financial problems. I have instructed the authorities to pay special attention. I have directed temporary repair work as well. Steps will be taken to build a permanent bridge and road. Money will be released on priority. We will also write to the Central government asking for financial aid," Yediyurappa said.

Flood situation in Uttara Kannada district

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan said that 108 villages have been affected by floods in Uttara Kannada district and 15,077 people have been affected. "Kali, Gangavalli and Aghanashini are flooded. The death toll from the floods has risen to one each in Yellapur, Sirsi, Siddapur and Honnavar. Two in Ankola and one in Yellapur are missing." he said.

"A total of 50 homes were partially damaged and 146 homes were completely damaged in the floods. As many as 9,655 affected have been provided shelter in 94 care centres across the district. The floods damaged 28 bridges and damaged 148.2 km of road. Vehicular traffic was halted due to a landslide on National Highway 63 in the district. National Highway 66 is open as the river Gangavali flow is low," Muhilan said.

A red alert has been issued for Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada, as well as south interior Karnataka, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu and Shivamogga districts.

Flood situation in Hubballi

A Tahasildar-led team has rescued two people who were trapped in a Bennahalla village in Kongavada village of Nawalgunda taluk in the Dharwad district. Late Saturday night, Desai Sangayya Javali(30) and Sharanaya Sangayya Javali (40) were trapped in the floods.

Eight thousand cusecs of water flowed through the five crest gates this morning from the Tungabhadra Reservoir. The current reservoir level is 1628.15 feet with 83.277 TMC ft of water. As much as 9,331 cusecs of water is discharged into the canal. Two lakh cusecs of water is flowing and the discharge is likely to be increased due to heavy inflow into the reservoir.
