Belagavi (Karnataka): A man chopped off the nose of an Anganwadi worker after her children plucked flowers from his garden in Karnataka's Belagavi, police said today. The woman helper suffered from heavy bleeding following the incident.
Sugandha More (50) is the Anganwadi helper who was assaulted. The owner of the house, Kalyani More, is named as the accused in the case which has been registered. Sungadha, who is seriously injured, has been admitted to a private hospital in Belagavi city.
According to police information, it has been alleged that the owner of the house verbally abused the Anganwadi helper and attacked her for the trivial reason that the children plucked the flowers that had grown in front of the neighboring house. The incident took place in front of the Anganwadi center on January 1 and came to light late belatedly.
The woman's condition is serious due to bleeding in her lungs due to her nose was cut. While playing Anganwadi children have plucked jasmine flowers that were grown in the premises of the house next to the Anganwadi. Enraged by this, the house owner lashed out at the Anganwadi helper. It is alleged that he assaulted the woman for a mistake that committed by the children.
Sugandha's husband is a physically challenged person and she takes care of the family by working as an Anganwadi helper. Sugandha is struggling between life and death after the attack. A case has been registered in Kakati police station in this regard.
When ETV Bharat contacted Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department AM Basavaraju, he said that he would write a letter to the City Police Commissioner to take legal action against those who assaulted the Anganwadi helper of Basurthe village. Also, a letter will be written to the Women and Child Welfare department about paying the medical expenses of the victim woman.
City Police Commissioner S.N. Siddaramappa told ETV Bharat, that the Kakati police are searching to nab the accused in connection with the assault case and will arrest him soon.
The District Committee of the State Anganwadi Employees Union (CITU) also staged a protest in front of the District Collector's office condemning the incident. They called it regrettable that the accused has not been arrested till now. The protestors expressed outrage that women have no protection in the district.
