Karnataka govt reserves 1% vacancies for transgenders

Karnataka has extended one per cent reservation for transgender persons in any service or post in all categories of employment. The vacancies will be filled through the direct recruitment process in the state.

Bengaluru: Karnataka government on Tuesday extended 1 per cent reservation for transgender persons in any service or post in all categories of employment which will be filled through a direct recruitment process in the state. The state government has made the provision while amending rule 9 of the Karnataka Civil Service (General Recruitment) Rules.

The reservation will be available for posts under each category of general merit, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and in each of the categories of among the Other Backward Classes (OBC). According to the amendment, each recruitment authority should make a separate column for the recruitment of Group B, C and D directors, as Male, Female and 'Others'.

"It has been maintained that no selection authority or recruitment authority can discriminate against a transgender candidate in the selection process for any category of posts," the notification said. The rule stipulates that if sufficient numbers of applicants are not available for the percentage reserved for transgender candidates, such positions should be filled by male or female candidates belonging to the same category.

The Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977, has been amended to enable reservation for transgender persons. The notification was issued on May 13. Objections and suggestions were invited within 15 days of the publication of those draft regulations. Now the notification has been formulated.
