Karnataka: Elephant herds disrupt daily life in Hassan

Wild elephant herds which enter public areas in Hassan district create panic among farmers and locals. People fear going to coffee estates as the elephants continue to damage farm produce and land.

Hassan: Wild elephants roaming around in Hassan district has created panic and anxiety among the local people. Farmers and residents in parts of Alur and Sakleshpur taluks are worried by the elephant herds that come out on the roads near forest fringe areas. Elephant herds are reportedly spotted daily in the estates. The jumbos in search of food damage coffee plants, causing great financial losses to the farmers.

More than 20 elephants are spotted at a time at the coffee estates in Hassan. The video of an elephant crossing the road captured by an individual has shocked the local people. Fearing the presence of wild elephants, people are hesitant to enter their own farming lands and estates. Even workers at the coffee estates do not go to work. Farmers are demanding the capture and relocation of all elephants immediately.
