Congress leader and senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was appearing for the Karnataka Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar, said that it was a 'satisfactory outcome till the time-being'. The Supreme Court ruled that 'status quo' be maintained on the resignations of the MLAs and no disqualification proceedings be initiated until 'larger Constitutional issues' related to the case are decided by the apex court. The bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose ordered the Karnataka Assembly Speaker not to take any action on the resignations of 10 rebel MLAs until it heard the matter again on July 16.

The SC order is set to play a key role in deciding the future of H D Kumaraswamy's coalition government.

The 13-month old Congress-JD(S) government slumped into crisis following the resignation of 10 MLAs from the membership of the state Assembly last week. 

Meanwhile speaking to the media, Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar on Monday said, "I scrutinised resignations based on Rule 202 of the Karnataka Assembly Rules and Procedures. Eight letters weren't in the prescribed format. In case of the rest, I'm obliged to look if resignations are voluntary and genuine. I won't speak about voluntary and genuine nature of resignations."

Congress' Roshan Baig and independent H Nagesh have also deserted the HD Kumaraswamy government.

The Congress has been accusing the BJP of conspiring to topple the coalition government in Karnataka. 

The ruling alliance is making all efforts to protect its government which seems to have fallen short of a majority.

The state Assembly has 225 members, including one nominated MLA. The halfway mark in the 225-member Assembly is 113.
