Karnataka braces for second wave of COVID-19

The state government is expected to ban New Year celebrations which include programmes in pubs, clubs, restaurants and public events.

Bengaluru: With major states bracing for the second round of the coronavirus pandemic, Karnataka COVID-19 technical advisory panel has come out with a set of suggestions to avoid the infection and ensure a check on its spread.

Expected to hit the state in January or February 2021, experts carried out extensive research and have now come out with warning and set of suggestions.

They advised the state government to take several precautionary measures and suggested the state government identify the second wave by studying the average cases in a week's time, and doubling period.

The technical advisory committee has submitted seven pages report on the possibility of the second wave, its detection and containing it.

Suggestions of the technical advisory committee:

  • Night curfew between December 26 and January 1 after 8 pm. No public celebration of the new year.
  • Identifying the non-governmental organisations to provide quality care and facilities in the Covid 19 care centers.
  • A decision on school reopening in January shall be taken after December end keeping in mind and taking into account the Covid 19 cases.
  • Ban on public events, programmes and festival celebrations shall be continued. Limited people shall be allowed to gather.
  • Ban on the swimming pools, sports activities shall be continued till February.
  • An average of 1.25 lakh RTPCR tests shall be carried out in the state till the end of February.
  • All the teachers, non-teaching staff and students attending classes in the educational institutions shall be subjected to RTPCR tests once in 15 days.
  • The committee suggested the state government keep ready medical facilities at par with October 2020 by the first week of January 2021.
  • Hospitals shall be well equipped with enough number of beds, ventilators, ICU, ambulances and other facilities to treat the Covid 19 patients. All these mentioned in the report.

Ban on the new year celebrations?

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) already submitted a proposal in this regard to the state government. The state government likely to issue an order in this regard based on these recommendations in the next two days.
