Mining scam: Ex-K'taka minister Janardhana Reddy seeks SC's permission to stay in Ballari

Citing CBI's opposition wherein it has apprehended that he will threaten the witnesses, Rohatgi contended that the trial is going on Hyderabad CBI court which is 100 km away from Ballari. "It's only CBI's fascination to oppose my bail," said Rohatgi.

New Delhi: Former Karnataka Minister and mining scam accused, Gali Janardhana Reddy, appealed before the Supreme Court today to allow him to visit his home town Bellari and relax his bail conditions since the trial has not progressed at all and at the rate at which it is progressing, it won't be completed in time.

Senior Advocate, Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Reddy contended before the court that he was arrested in 2011 and bailed out in 2015 but certain conditions were put on him including not being allowed to visit Ballari, his hometown. Rohatgi said that 10 years have passed and 10 more years will pass considering the slow pace of the trial and therefore it is very harsh to put such conditions on him.

He belongs to Ballari, he is married there, he was an MLA from there, has an ancestral home and should be allowed to go there and be with his family.

CBI opposed the bail and contended before the court that if the bail condition is relaxed, it will result in delay. "The fact that he will stay in Ballari would result in fear in the minds of people," argued CBI.

Due to time paucity, the hearing could not be concluded today and the court will hear the matter tomorrow again.
