Four held in K'taka's Chikmagalur for attacking environmentalist

Police on Thursday arrested four people in connection with the alleged assault of noted environmentalist DV Girish in Chikmagalur.

Chikmagalur (Karnataka): Police on Thursday arrested four people in connection with the alleged assault of noted environmentalist DV Girish in Chikmagalur. The incident had taken place at Kambihalli of Chikmagalur district on August 31.

According to the FIR lodged at Chikmagalur rural police station, Girish was travelling back home with his friends and their daughters. Some youths who were sitting on the road allegedly teased the daughter of Girish's friend. Girish then stopped the car and questioned them. After this, the youth allegedly followed his vehicle on bikes and beat him mercilessly. However, some unconfirmed reports say Girish was beaten up by local youths after he teased a woman in the village.

The accused have been charged under Sections 341,504,323,324,506,149 of IPC and Sections 12 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Girish was awarded the prestigious RBS 'Protect the Tiger' award for playing a crucial role in protecting the Bhadra Tiger Reserve.
