2 dead after explosion at quarry in Kerala's Malayattoor

Two migrants died after an explosion in a quarry in Malayattoor, Ernakulam on Monday. The incident occurred as stored gunpowder exploded. The deceased were identified as Salem native Periyannan(38), Karnataka Chamarajanagar native D Naga(34).

Ernakulam: Two migrant workers died after an explosion in a quarry in Malayattoor, Ernakulam on Monday. The deceased were identified as Salem native Periyannan(38), Karnataka Chamarajanagar native D. Naga(34).

The explosion happened in a building near the quarry as stored gunpowder exploded. Both of them were working in the quarry. The incident took place in the wee hours of Monday. They worked in the quarry in Illithodu near Malayttoor.

The two, who returned after the lockdown, were reportedly in quarantine. The dead bodies were recovered from the demolished building with the help of JCB. Bodies are kept in a private hospital in Angamaly.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear. Police have initiated an investigation. The locals had earlier lodged a complaint against the quarry.
