Mysuru (Karnataka): After the state government enacted the Cow slaughter Prohibition Act, carnivores have been affected.
Mysore Zoo has many carnivorous animals including lion, leopard, tiger, crocodile, hyena, African cheetah etc. From the earliest times, they have been fed beef.
However, after the cow slaughter ban, poultry meat is being offered instead of beef. Yet chicken is not turning out to be as appealing as beef for the animals.
The ban on cow slaughter has been affecting the carnivorous animals at the zoo. Animals at the zoo on an average need 300 to 350 kg beef every day.
But now, more than 500kg of chicken has to be served.
Moreover, from the point of view of animal health, chicken is not a favourite.
Zoo executive Ajit Kulkarni has reported that doctors have been keeping track of whether they are slowly adapting to the poultry-based diet, as now beef cannot be fed to carnivores.
