Being the inmates in the Refugee Center, the senior citizens have started cultivating fruits and vegetables which they are selling under the sponsorship of the government.

This initiative also helped them to get monetary support for themselves because whatever amount the inmates earned from cultivation goes directly to their bank accounts.

The money will be given to them when they go out of the centre.

Not only that but this idea of cultivation changed the scenario of a barren hillock into a place covered with a thick green blanket.

Chitradurga: Once, they were all destitutes. No one to care and none to fend - all neglected by their own children. Thanks to the effort of a sincere government officer. They are leading a self-reliant life at the Centre for Destitutes, Gonoor.

A barren hillock, which most people found useless ten years ago, is covered with a thick green blanket now due to the relentless work of these senior citizens - the inmates of the Centre for Destitutes at Gonoor on the outskirts of Chitradurga. They have made this barren hillock lush green. Various varieties of crops and plants have come on this hillock today.

The green story began when the Centre for Destitutes, which was earlier functioning from a rented building in Chitradurga, was shifted to Gonoor, a village on the outskirts of the famed fort city.

Bhagyamma, who works at the centre, says, “Several aged people, who were into begging, have been brought to this Centre for Destitutes. They are being given suitable treatment and taken care of well. These senior citizens are leading a dignified life today.”

Mahadevaiah, officer of the Centre for Destitute, says, “Most of the people here are destitutes. They are growing fruits and vegetables. We sell their produce and deposit the money into their bank accounts. The money will be given to them when they go out of the centre. “

At a time when government officials are criticized for receiving bribe and blamed for irregularities, the officers of the Social Welfare Department at this Centre for Destitutes have indeed become a model.
