Bengaluru: Kempegowda International Airport in Karnataka's Bengaluru is on a mission to use recycled plastics to make roads inside the airport campus and has hit the target of 50 kilometers of plastic road today.
According to reports, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has also started a campaign to seek plastic waste as donations to aid in its green initiative.
The campaing called PlasticBeku (Want Plastic) is part of the ongoing plan to build plastic induced roads inside the premise.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has reportedly pledged around 11 tones of plastic to support the BIAL campaign.
This unique campaign also looks to raise awareness about waste segregation at source to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment. To construct 50 kilometers stretch of road, 50 tones of shredded plastic is required.
BIAL had earlier claimed that it conducted lab tests by blending bitumen with plastic and results were within acceptable limits.
They also decided to go ahead with building polymersied roads that have a strong binding ability and are able to withstand extreme weather conditions as compared to asphalt roads.
